EDC shares progress report with county
Bill Slagle, executive director of the Mitchell County Economic Development Commission, gave a report on the EDC to the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners last week.
Slagle noted that the written version of his semi-annual report is posted on the EDC’s website. The EDC’s website is located at https://mitchellcountyedc.org/.
Slagle went over some highlights from the written report, such as outreach efforts to bring more business to the county.
“We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work closely with the Mayland Small Business Center,” Slagle said. “They have been a tremendous asset.”
Slagle said that the Small Business Center has a number of helpful resources for entrepreneurs, both established and just starting out.
Slagle also spoke about new businesses opening up in the county.
“I’ve had conversations with the new retail development up on Burleson Hill, and it looks like we’re a go on that, with most of the leases signed sometime after the winter breaks,” he said.
Slagle also said the EDC is working towards acquiring property for a business park.
“We have secured grant funding for all that,” he said.
A formal announcement of the business park plan will probably be forthcoming in March, Slagle said.
He noted that the EDC is working on housing needs, and has been researching how to make sure working people have the childcare they need.
“We see a real need with housing,” Slagle said. “Employers that I talk with are concerned about childcare … It creates a problem for the employee and the employer.”
Board Chairman Jeff Harding thanked Slagle for the report.
“I think it’s very impressive what you guys have pulled together, what you’re working and doing within the community and the whole county,” he said.
