GAFFNEY, SOUTH CAROLINA -- William Stephen Bratton, 68, of 172 Stroupe Estate Road, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 11, 2017, at his residence.

Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of Susan Lee Bratton and son of the late Rev. Troy A. Bratton and Osteen Humphries Bratton. He was a graduate of Boiling Springs High School, Isothermal Community College and retired from Alcoa. He was an avid Gaffney Indian fan and South Carolina Gamecock fan, member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and loved his family dearly, especially his grandsons.

TAMARAC, FLORIDA -- James D. “Deward” Buchanan, 88, of Tamarac, Florida, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017.

Mr. Buchanan was born March 25, 1928, to the late Pat and Bertha Buchanan in the Hawk Community of Mitchell County. His wife of 66 years, Claire Buchanan, survives him.

Mr. Buchanan served in the United States Navy where he developed a love for electronics, which led to a long career with IBM.

GREEN MOUNTAIN -- Gail Griffith, 76, of the Tipton Hill community in Green Mountain, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Born Dec. 14, 1940, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Frances Profitt Bryant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister; Brenda Blanton and three brothers; Kenneth, Bill and Jim Bryant.

SPRUCE PINE -- Helen Clapp Greene, 94, of Dula Road, Spruce Pine, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at Care Partners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville.

Born on Nov. 3, 1922, in the Plumtree community of Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. T.W. and Nell Kesler Clapp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward P. Greene, who died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, James and Paul Clapp; and her sisters, Mary Stinson and Martha Hayes.

SPRUCE PINE -- Arletha Ann Grindstaff Phillips, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She joined our Savior Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at Blue Ridge Hospital in Spruce Pine.  Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Leora Grindstaff; and her brother, Buster Grindstaff. 

SPRUCE PINE -- Jack William Sullins, 88, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.  

Jack was born April 15, 1928, in Spruce Pine to Lee Monroe and Annie Pitman Sullins. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Sullins.

SPRUCE PINE -- Ophelia “Teed” Wilson, 90, of Overlook Drive, Spruce Pine, passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and her son, Michael.

Born Dec. 29, 1926, Teed was a longtime resident of Spruce Pine. She was one of the first telephone operators for Southern Bell. Teed retired from the Mitchell County School System, where she worked as a teacher’s assistant.

She loved spending time with her friends from the Red Hats and Breakfast Club, gardening, playing cards and reading a good book.

Kathryn (Kay) Elaine Olsen Cavicchi died Feb. 23, 2017, after a brief illness. A memorial discourse was Saturday, March 4, at the Kingdom of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Burnsville. Gary Miglino presided. 

HICKORY -- Tony Allen Hughes, 72, of Hickory, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017. A Funeral Service was noon Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at Catawba Funerals & Cremations. Burial followed at Catawba Memorial Park. The Hughes Family is under the care of Catawba Memorial Park, Funerals & Cremations.

Clyde Bartlett, 82, of the South Toe Community, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at the Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Avery and Lockie Smith Bartlett. 

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Jean Johnson Bartlett, who passed away in 2006; an infant daughter, Wanda; and siblings, Lewis, Ellen Lola, Lee, Landon and Carl.  

GOLDSBORO -- Irene Texanna Blevins went home to be with the Lord at 1 a.m. on Christmas morning at her home in Goldsboro. We are having a Celebration of Life Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Mayland Community College, P.O. Box 547, Mayland Drive in Spruce Pine.

Irene retired from Mayland as a nursing instructor. Nothing gave her more joy than to see her students graduate with pride in their accomplishments. 

MARION -- William Scott Stockton, 46, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, with a smile on his face.  A funeral service for Mr. Stockton was 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, at Beam Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Clay Dale and the Rev. Josh Miller. Also, speaking were his sons, Casey and Tyler Stockton. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Interment was in the Snow Hill Cemetery. Beam Funeral Service is assisting the Stockton family.

ROAN MOUNTAIN, TENN. -- Mary Vonell Harrison Clawson, 80, of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, was surrounded by her family and friends when she went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017.

Mary was born June 21, 1936. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved attending her church every chance she could. She was a faithful member of Buck Mountain Holiness Church for many years.

In addition to her parents, Ancel and Sally Townsend Harrison, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, and a daughter, Sally.

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. -- Lucy Jewel Greene, 91, of Johnson City, Tennessee, a native of Mitchell County, went home to be with the Lord Feb. 5, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. 

Lucy loved going to church and was faithful to her Apostolic Faith in God. She attended Fork Mountain Holiness Church of The Lord Jesus Christ the majority of her life. She was retired from Baxter Laboratories. She was devoted to her family and friends and was very gifted with gardening, cooking and canning. She so loved her flowers.  

SPRUCE PINE -- Ray Stafford, 80, of Spruce Pine, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 27, 1936, in Mitchell County to the late Taylor and Mamie Gurley Stafford. Mr. Stafford was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Pine Branch Baptist Church. He loved his church and had perfect attendance in Sunday school for 18 years. He enjoyed wildflower photography, collecting cameras and woodworking. He especially enjoyed making clocks.
