BAKERSVILLE – Gladys Buchanan Duncan, 94, of Duncan Drive, Bakersville, died Monday, April 4, 2016, at Blue Ridge Regional hospital in Spruce Pine.

A funeral service was Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the Bear Creek Baptist Church.

BAKERSVILLE - Sabra “Ann” McKinney Buchanan, 67, of the McKinney Cove Community, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late James and Ruth Gouge McKinney and a member of the McKinney Cove Baptist Church.

GREEN MOUNTAIN - David Renfro, age 58, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly Monday, April 11, 2016 at his home. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of Elouise P. Renfro. of Brummitts Creek. and the late Bernie Renfro, who passed away in 2015. 

He was employed with CSX Railroad since 1977. David attended Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church and loved talking and laughing with his friends, working on his farm, playing with his special dogs, but mostly, loved his Lord and his family. 

BURNSVILLE - Walt Peterson, age 78 of State Hwy 197N Burnsville, NC passed away March 22, 2016 at his home. He was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a son of the late Clayton and Lassie Barnett Peterson. He was retired as a Loader Operator at Unimin Corporation.

CHARLOTTE - George Louis Peters died March 20, 2016 in Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC. Born May 5, 1935 in Little Rock, AR, to Frances Trapp Peters and Robert S. Peters, he grew up in Little Rock where he attended Catholic schools. He graduated from the University of Arkansas with an architectural degree and practiced architecture for over twenty-five years for J.N. Pease Associates in Charlotte. After retirement he and his wife moved to the Buladean community of Mitchell County. Mr.

FLORIDA/SPRUCE PINE - Dr. Gloria Houston, known internationally as an educator and an author of multi-award winning best sellers for young readers as well as textbooks, died peacefully after a long battle with cancer on Monday, March 21, 2016 at her daughter’s home in Apollo Beach, Florida. She was 75. Dr. Houston wrote over 10 books that were published in numerous languages. Her books have won and been listed on more than forty awards and awards lists. Over the years, she taught at the University of South Florida and Western Carolina University and was lovingly referred to as “Ms.
