SPRUCE PINE -- Arletha Ann Grindstaff Phillips, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She joined our Savior Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at Blue Ridge Hospital in Spruce Pine. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Leora Grindstaff; and her brother, Buster Grindstaff.
Ann is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bud Phillips. She has four sons, Rick Phillips and wife, Julie, of Bakersville, Joey Phillips and wife, Melissa, of Spruce Pine, Eddie Phillips and wife, Leslye, of Winston-Salem, and Andy Phillips and wife, Sandy, of Spruce Pine. Ann has seven grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Brinkley, Lacey, Shea, Drew, Makayla, Carson and Lexi. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ella Boone, of Spruce Pine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Bakersville Jan. 13, 1936, Ann was a lifelong resident of Mitchell County. She was raised in Bakersville on Mine Creek; she graduated Bowman High School in 1954 and upon her marriage to Bud, she moved to Spruce Pine, where she lovingly raised her four boys. She was a member of Mine Creek Baptist Church and was very strong in her faith. Ann had a beautiful alto voice and sang throughout her life in various choirs including her church choir, Bowman Glee Club, Mitchell County Community Choir, Grassy Creek Singing Christmas Tree and many more. Beginning as a young girl, Ann helped in her aunt’s beauty salon in Bakersville. From there, her love of styling hair began. She opened her shop, Ann’s Beauty Salon, in Spruce Pine in the 1960s. As well as running her shop, Ann worked as an instructor in Cosmetology at both Mayland Technical Community College in the early 1980s and McDowell Community College beginning in 1986 and retiring there in May of 2012. She was on numerous boards of directors in cosmetology, including the North Carolina Cosmetology Aesthetics & Nail as well as The National Board of Cosmetology. Ann received her Associate Degree in cosmetology in 1998. Ann was very involved in various homemaker clubs throughout her life, but her greatest love of all was the love of her own home and family.
The funeral service was 3 p.m. Friday, March 3, in Mine Creek Baptist Church in Bakersville. The Rev. Chris Rathbone and the Rev. Mark McKinney officiated. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until time of service. Burial followed at Mine Creek Baptist Cemetery.
