Helen Clapp Greene
SPRUCE PINE -- Helen Clapp Greene, 94, of Dula Road, Spruce Pine, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at Care Partners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville.
Born on Nov. 3, 1922, in the Plumtree community of Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. T.W. and Nell Kesler Clapp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward P. Greene, who died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, James and Paul Clapp; and her sisters, Mary Stinson and Martha Hayes.
Helen was a member of the Grassy Creek Presbyterian Church. She was retired from the Mitchell County School System where she spent most of her career teaching seventh grade. She was a graduate of Montreat College where she played on the basketball team and East Tennessee State University. She was a member of Spruce Pine Chapter No. 27 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed puzzles, tennis and swimming.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, Jerry Greene, and wife, Jean, of Seneca, South Carolina; her daughters, Jane Hensley and husband, Mike, of Spruce Pine, and Ann Greene Smith, of Spruce Pine; her brother, T. Walton Clapp; her sisters, Nell Smith and Jean Isaacs; her grandchildren, Michelle “Shelley” Pitsenberger, Wendy Blake, Preston Greene, Rachel Pitman, Luke Hensley and Austin Smith; and great grandchildren, Jordan, Joshua, Jordy, Kaylen, Brenden, Charlie, Lucy, Kaitlyn and Hayden.
A funeral service was 1 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017, in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Revs. Jim Taylor and Bobby Justice officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends was noon until the service hour in the funeral home chapel. Interment followed in Tanglewood Cemetery in Linville.
Those who prefer to make memorial donations may do so to either the National Parkinson’s Foundation or Care Partners Hospice Solace Center.
