Jayceemae Erwin of Mitchell County was one of two girls from North Carolina to earn a medal and All-American recognition at the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s National Freestyle Championships recently.
The wrestling competition was held in Spokane, Washington. All told, 14 girls from North Carolina were among the more than 1,500 girls competing. Katie Stowe of Mitchell High School also participated and finished the tournament 1-2.
Erwin finished fourth in the under-14, 165-pound division. She dropped a close 5-2 decision in round 1 to eventual champion Shaelani Panser of Idaho, and was winning her second bout 2-0 before sustaining an injury that prevented her from continuing.
Erwin, an eighth grader at Mitchell Middle School, was team North Carolina’s youngest competitor this year.
