The Mitchell Mountaineers varsity baseball team pulled off a comeback win over the Owen Warhorses Friday, with a final score of 11-6.
What started off as a rough game turned into a strong finish, thanks to smart base running, big hits and a few mistakes by the Warhorses.
The first inning didn’t go the Mountaineers’ way, with Owen High School jumping ahead 2-0. The game stayed quiet until the third inning, when things started looking up for Mitchell.
Kaj Pittman got on base after a fielding error, and Collin McFalls was the first to score a run, creating hope for Mitchell.
“That was nerve-wracking,” said Kaden Buchanan. “I didn’t think it would be too good because of some errors, but we pushed through, had a couple of hits, and won.”
McFalls’ run was just the beginning of the home stretch for the Mountaineers. Jaxon Rohr came up with a hit that brought in two runs, tying the game 3-3. Kaden Buchanan and Jace Blanton followed with strong hits, helping the Mountaineers take a 6-3 lead.
The Warhorses managed to score one run in the fourth, bringing the game to 6-4. The fifth inning was quieter, with both teams scoring slowly.
The score at the end of the fifth was 7-6, but Mitchell stayed calm. A big moment came with Kaden Buchanan making a clean catch from the mound to get the third out against the Warhorses.
