Connor Hobson, a third-grader at Mitchell Elementary School, has redefined what it means to be a powerhouse at just nine years old. Competing at the USAPL North Carolina State Championships on April 12.

Hobson set national and state records in the Men’s Raw Youth 1 60kg division, showcasing his strength and determination.

Hobson, who has been powerlifting competitively for just one and a half years, broke the American bench press record previously held by Jackson Bo Jensen by lifting 43 kilograms (94.79 pounds). He also set North Carolina state records in the squat with 55 kilograms (121 pounds) and the deadlift with an impressive 95 kilograms (209 pounds). His total lift of 193 kilograms (425.49 pounds) established a new state record for the division.

Hobson’s journey in powerlifting has been marked by consistent results. At Youth Nationals on July 12, 2024, he set American and North Carolina records in the 56kg division for Youth 1, bench pressing 34 kilograms (74.96 pounds), deadlifting 91 kilograms (200.62 pounds), and achieving a total of 180 kilograms (396.83 pounds).

Earlier, in December 2023, Hobson claimed regional and state records in the 52kg division with a 30-kilogram (66.14-pound) bench press single lift.

Competing in the raw division, where lifters rely solely on their strength without supportive equipment, Hobson’s achievements are even more notable. His records span multiple weight classes and age divisions, including Youth 1 and Youth 2, as well as Southeast Regional and North Carolina state levels.
