The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA-Part B, Public Law 108.446) Project is presently being amended. The Project describes the special education programs that Mitchell County Schools proposes for Federal funding for the 2024-2025 School Year. PUBLIC NOTICE

05/01/24: High Country United Way is pleased to announce that Mitchell County was awarded $6,296 Phase 41 State Set-Aside Funding. EFSP, a Federal program administered by US Department of Homeland Securitys Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to supplement and expand ongoing efforts to provide shelter, food, and supportive services for the nations hungry, homeless and people in economic crisis.
Local service agencies in Mitchell County may apply for a portion of the funding with an application obtained by emailing director@highcountryunitedway.org with a letter of request. Eligibility to apply under the terms of the grants from the National Board require that local agencies must (1) be private, voluntary nonprofits or units of government (2) have an accounting system and the ability to produce very detailed records and receipts, (3) practice non-discrimination, (4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs and (5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Letters of request to apply for funding should address the above points and must be received with application by 5:00 p.m. on 05-10-24. TAKE NOTICE THAT: Pursuant to N.C.G.S. §115C-72, the Mitchell County Board of Education (the Board) is considering closure of Bowman Middle School at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, with the intent that students currently attending the school will be assigned to the new Mitchell Middle School building at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. The Board will receive administrative study reports concerning the closure, and public comment concerning the same. Any persons interested in commenting on the matter will be heard.
The Board shall hold a public hearing for this purpose at its regular meeting on May 23, 2024, beginning at 5pm in the Board Room at the Mitchell County Schools Central Office, 72 Ledger School Road, Bakersville.
